... let us rid ourselves of every burden and sin that clings to us and persevere in running the race that lies before us while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the leader and perfecter of faith. Hebrews 12:1-2 (excerpt)

Once Again Life Explodes!

So, after a pretty good start...it has come to a screeching halt. The exercising I mean, life doesn't stop. I had a good first week (4 of 5 days) and a so so second week (2 of 5) and now a non-existent third week. What happened you may ask....kids got sick and I got sick. Just colds, but everyone was stuffy. Getting over it now so hopefully we'll be well in time for Christmas. I'll see what I can fit in next week, but am not betting on too much over the holidays. I'll just join all the other people in January. Cheerleading has been going well - thankfully we don't have to get up at the crack of dawn this weekend. I am looking forward to Christmas break - days to sleep in and move slow will be nice. Here comes a PJ day!

I Made It!

After a rough start, I made it through the rest of the week without missing a day. Today was especially hard because it was sub freezing temps and I didn't want to take the kids out (at least that was going to be my excuse). But I went and had a good workout. My arms hurt when I try to lift my hands past my shoulders - so eating and drinking hurts my triceps.

On another note, I have an interesting reading to share. Our church gives out Little Blue Advent books and you are to spend 6 minutes a day reading them and reflecting on them. Today's reflection meant a lot to me. I'm going to put it out here and then explain.

  • On that day the deaf shall hear the words of a book; and out of gloom and darkness, the eyes of the blind shall see. The lowly will ever find joy in the Lord, and the poor rejoice in the Holy One of Israel. (Is 29:17-24)
  • And "the lowly will ever find joy in the Lord.."
  • Joy.
  • Great tidings of joy.
  • Joy to the world.
  • The word "joy" can be used in different ways. Roget's Thesaurus says it can mean happiness, gladness, delight, delectation, cheer, glee, gaity, intoxication - you get the idea. When Jesus says to the disciples at the Last Supper table: "I have told you this so thay my joy might be in you and your joy would be complete" - he uses the Greek word "chara", taken from the word "charis" which means grace. That's getting to the heart of what biblical joy really means. Simply put, "grace" means "God leaning toward me, bending over me, inclining toward me kindly, favorably." That's what God is and that's who God is for us. There is never a moment when God isn't moving toward me that way. No matter what the situation, god is leaning toward me kindly, favorably. And it's God's initiative. It's got nothing to do with whether I deserve it.
  • Now that's a tiding of great joy.

So here is why this struck me so today. I have a good friend that believes that there are no coincidences - everything is of grace. I have a similar belief in that I think everything happens for a reason. Here is what that all means to me. Nothing happens by accident. People are put in your life for a purpose - whether it is a good friend or a stranger. I can't tell you how many times I've been in a store and the kids are being whiny and picking at each other and I am ready to leave them there when a complete stranger complements how beautiful they are and tells me to enjoy them because it goes by quickly. I always thank them, but I'm not sure they realize how heartfelt my thanks really are. I encounter situations and people that force me to take a step back and realize that all my minor struggles are really that, minor. I've written about them before. So think about that as you encounter strangers this Christmas season...your smile or "Merry Christmas" might be just what they needed in that moment. You might be their "grace" and you may not realize it until later when you have encountered it from someone else. Take a minute to thank God for that moment. I hope you all (six of you now?) have a very blessed Christmas Season and many grace filled moments.

Almost Through the First Week!

I tried something different today...instead of working out in the morning, I decided to try working out in the afternoon after picking up Valerie from preschool. It was great. The Y was empty, I had my choice of treadmills and I was busy exercising during my "munchie" time of day. I was able to do 2 miles. I may try it again tomorrow. It may allow for some time to actually do some stuff around the house in the mornings. I'm planning on taking the weekend off. Samantha has her first basketball game that she cheers at on Saturday morning. It is a 9am game and we have to be there an hour ahead of time - whew! That is gonna be an early morning for both of us. I'll post pictures.

Three Down

Wound up heading to the Y again today. It was Veronica's first day at preschool - which was a piece of cake - no tears at all. She is just going one morning a week. Unfortunately most of that time Valerie spent at the Y, but she likes it. I'm hoping for some one on one time. Got to the Y and the room with the treadmills was crowded, so I checked the class schedule and Strength and Endurance was starting....so, I did 60 minutes of strength training. Lots of core muscles used, shoulders, triceps, biceps...my arms are tired! But I feel good and glad I made it. I'm going to try to go later in the afternoon tomorrow for a run on the treadmill and see how that works.

Day 2!

The workout was much better today. I actually made it to the Y and spent just over 30 min on the bike. The plan was to just do 30, but I was listening to Matthew Kelly: Perfectly Yourself on my ipod and forgot to check my time. I love it when that happens. My legs are tired, but I feel good. Just happy to be doing something again. The plan is treadmill and/or weights tomorrow. Samantha has cheerleading again tonight - two more practices before the first game. It is at 9am on Saturday and the first one we have to be there an hour beforehand...ugh! How early am I getting up on a Saturday? I'll be sure and post pictures in the cheerleading uniform; get ready for cuteness!

Starting a New Habit

So - my friend on another blog has challenged those of us that want to make a change to attempt it for the next 21 days. Today was day 1. Mine didn't quite go as planned. I'm wanting to do some form of exercise for 30 min each day (minus weekends - I need time off). Today was supposed to be a 2 mile run. The weather was crummy all day - snowy and wet, but not terribly cold. My running partner has switched jobs and has limited time and wants to do a different program that is indoors. So - we aren't planning on running outside together until spring. I was going solo tonight. Todd told me it was pretty cold so I got all my gear on and went out. I'm not sure I even made it 1/4 mile. It wasn't the cold...the wet pavement froze and there was a sheen of ice, my feet kept slipping. I probably could have done it, but I was afraid with the altered gait I would hurt myself. So I came home. Day one - bust! Trying again tomorrow. Heading to the Y for some time on a bike and with the weight machines. (providing the gunk isn't pouring out of Veronica's nose - today wasn't so bad) Anyone else want to jump on the 21 day habit? Giving up something, trying to add something, let's support each other.

Out of the Mouths of Babes

Last weekend we are having dinner with Todd's parents. Todd's dad was chewing and talking and I hear Valerie trying to get his attention. I'm trying to cut her off, but she finally succeeds int getting his attention. This is what she says: "Granpa - don't chew with your mouth open. Because I don't want to hear that." That is what she hears from Todd and I - chew with your mouth closed...we don't want to hear you chewing. Last night we are having dinner at my parents'. Ribs are in the oven and Valerie asks "Papaw - is that the chicken you killed?" We aren't really sure where that came from, but it was really funny. Happy Thanksgiving!

How Old Am I?

It was a good weekend. Samantha and I went to see the HS production of Footloose on Friday, which was fantastic. It was nice too that we knew a couple of the performers. Saturday night was the great night for me. After the kids were in bed, I went over to a girlfriends' house and spent the night. She had around 12 of us there and 3 wound of staying the night. It was a blast - we had our PJs on, she gave us all tiaras to wear and we played games - euchre, apples to apples, American Idol Sing It, Rockband - needless to say we didn't get to bed until 4am. I don't know that I was up that late in college. I had a busy Sunday - Valerie had a birthday party to attend. Then I went to bed early and am still trying to catch up from sleep. Quick update on the health of the household...Valerie and Veronica are doing well and seem to be over the bronchitis. No runny noses or much coughing. Todd is using a nasal spray to try and get his congestion taken care of and still working on letting his mouth heal from the wisdom teeth removal. Samantha is still congested and coughing. I have a feeling I'll be heading back to the doctor with her. So far so good - I'm still healthy. Although I have a headache today, which is perfect because I'm volunteering in Samantha's classroom and then staying to have lunch with her. Could make for an interesting post later. Have a great day everyone (all 5 of you that read this)

Not So Much!

A little better day, but MORE crying. This time it was Valerie upset because she wasn't getting to go play at Samantha's friends house. She just doesn't get that Samantha is almost 3 years older than her. I have game night tonight and am SO looking forward to getting away from the house for a few hours and laughing, playing and having a few beverages. Then again - with everything I've had going on and had to deal with, there is always something to remind me that my life is good. A good friend of mine had her dad go missing Monday night. He was found last night and is okay, but over 24 hours missing had to be scary. He has had memory issues in the past, but this is the first for something this extreme. He was found 3 hours from home. I can't imagine what lies ahead of them for decisions that need to be made. Then there is my other friend who is expecting her first baby in January and they don't know what that is going to bring. He has Trisomy 13 which isn't good and they had to meet with a nurse on Monday to make all the "arrangements" for his birth. So many questions they have to prepare for...will he make it through the delivery, how long will he survive, will he get to come home at all? Again - the path they have in front of them. The best thing these two friends have going for them is their support group of friends and family and their faith in God. They have a lot of people praying for them and they gather strength from that. So - when you say your prayers tonight, keep Sandy and Beth and their families in mind and maybe a little one for me. My problems are small, but I could still use some help. Thanks so much!

AAAGGGGHHHH! Make it stop!

Okay - I've had my fill of crying from the girls. Yesterday - all three were in tears at the dentist and yes - I took them by myself. Tonight - Samantha wound up in tears at a soccer clinic I took her to. She keeps going back and forth about whether or not she is interested. So her school was having a free "clinic" that was put on by the Dad's club. I asked her and she said she wanted to go. So I signed her up and we got home from swimming, ate dinner quickly and then took off for school. It all started off fine (except for the fact that out of 30 kids' parents, I was the only mom). Todd would have gone, but still recovering from wisdom teeth and also has a cold. Well - after the first two "exercises/games" Samantha got all shy and didn't want to participate. She was hanging out next to me - I asked and asked and gave her options for trying to get her to participate. After almost 30 minutes, I decided it was not worth it to be there and we were going home. She started to get upset, but I got her outside before she really started throwing her fit. Then the whole way home in the car it was nothing but crying, screaming, she wanted to go back and try it. Then she said that if I didn't take her back she wasn't going to school tomorrow and she meant it. When we got home, Valerie was in her room crying because she didn't eat her dinner and Todd sent her to her room. I'm hoping everyone is just tired and tomorrow will be better. So, I'm having a drink and trying to relax.

Fun Photos

I had a chance to dress up with my girlfriends.

What Do You Think?

Thanks to Go Mom Go for inspiring me with her new template...what do you think of this? Appropriate for life with three girls? Quick update - still working on running and that is going well. Was going to head back to the Y tomorrow to lift and Veronica has a very runny nose. Of course. Todd had his wisdom teeth taken out on Friday (just the two bottom). As he is recovering from that he has an awful cold on top of it. Stinks! This week is chaos...dentist appointments, doctor appointment, haircuts, swim lessons, soccer clinic at school for Samantha, game night for me, dinner out with work for Todd, Rocket Math explanation at school for Samantha, Footloose at the high school for me and Samantha, and we have to fit dinners and homework in there somewhere. Hopefully Saturday night I get to go to a sleepover at a girlfriends house. As long as I'm healthy and everyone else is cooperative. So - life is crazy here as usual. I will work on getting halloween pics up. Valerie made it to three houses before she got so freaked out by the scary masks she decided to stay inside and watch movies. I'm not sure who was disappointed, her or Todd. Veronica made it to more, but she was just moving too slow - so she hung out with me and handed out candy. Samantha lasted the longest - she did over a mile walking. She had "halloween homework" and she had to sort and count her candy. Over 250 pieces of candy. I'm sort of glad it was just her and not two of them...I wouldn't be happy with 500 pieces of candy in the house calling my name.

Life Keeps Getting in the Way

So, why does life get in the way? I'm not down on myself and I know there are things out of my control, but it is so frustrating. I had started my workout schedule and was feeling good - then kids got sick. That threw a kink in to everything and here it is a month later and I haven't been on the bike or done weights. I have been running twice a week. Thanks to my neighbor who is also trying to get into exercising. I'm making progress, just not the way I want. I was all set to head to the Y on Monday and get on the bike...Samantha was up for 30 min coughing the night before so I let her sleep and drove her to school. That threw the whole morning off and since I knew I was running in the evening I skipped it. Tuesday was spent at the dentist and doctor's office. Samantha is taking Singulair for 2 weeks and then being rechecked to see if it might be some sort of asthma thing. Today was a relaxing day at home cleaning. It was exactly what I needed. No one needed to be anywhere. I'll be running in the evening again tomorrow so pretty much, no Y for the rest of the week. I find myself get frustrated, but then remember that these things are small. I have friends dealing with much bigger issues and that helps keep things in perspective and I try to remember to offer my frustrations and trials up for them. I do try to be thankful as I'm taking a child to the doctor for the 3rd time in 2 weeks, because we have healthcare and they will be taken care of. The fact that I need to lose weight...I try to remember that it is because I have plenty to eat and am not wondering where my next meal will come from. So, the fact that my routine isn't going the way I want isn't a big deal. I'll keep trying and doing what I can and I'll enjoy my life with all its ups and downs and twists and turns. How does that saying go? If you want to make God laugh, make plans. It is true. God Bless!

Boy or Girl?

A commercial comes on the other day for Yoplait yogurt. It is two women in the grocery talking about all the different flavors - key lime pie, boston creme pie...suddenly Richard Simmons shows up and starts yelling at them and doing his aerobics - prancing and dancing in his little sparkly outfit. Samantha (with a sideways glance): Daddy is that a boy or a girl? Daddy (withholding his laughter): That's a boy.

Life Teen

So - I just got home from my first Life Teen meeting as a Core member at our church. It was fun and I'm so glad I went. Life Teen is a ministry for High School students - "Leading Teens Closer to Christ" As a core member, I am one of the adults that helps out with the retreats as well as the weekly Life Teen meetings. Tonight was my "introduction" and it was fun. They are participating in a nationwide clothing drive. Life Teen set a goal of getting 50,000 lbs of clothes nationwide. Our parish alone - as of tonight had almost 14, 000 lbs of clothes. Amazing! So, I of course am all wound up and excited from getting to spend an evening with high school kids who are participating in the youth group and am looking forward to more nights like this. Just had to share - thanks for listening!

Biggest Loser Quote

So - one of the few reality shows I do like to watch is The Biggest Loser. The sad part is that I usually am sitting eating pretzels and sometimes drinking a beer while watching it. Not good. Tonight I got a big glass of water instead. We finally watched the first one - we record it so we don't have to watch all the dramatic interruptions and pauses - we can fast forward through them. Anyhow - one of the ladies said something tonight and I want to have a shirt made - "There is no epidural for exercise." I thought it was classic. I was sad to see the first couple voted off, but they looked awesome in the follow up. We'll see how it plays out. I'm running with a neighbor tomorrow evening - maybe it wasn't a good thing to watch Biggest Loser tonight because now I'm all motivated. Hopefully we won't hurt ourselves - she hasn't done anything in about 6 months since she had her baby. I think we are a good match for running together. Thanks for listening and have a great night.

(Buurrrp) Amen!

So - just didn't know if I could follow up the last post with anything meaningful. Well - our girls are pretty free when it comes to burping (out both ends as we call them fanny burps). Valerie seems the most gassy. We are waiting for the time she rips one during church and boy is it going to echo on the wood pew. I think we'll have to leave because we'll be laughing so hard. Anyhow - I digress. Belching....tonight at dinner, it was Valerie's turn to say prayers. As she is saying it a rather juicy burp escapes, she doesn't miss a beat and keeps right on praying. After she finished and said Amen - she said excuse me. What else are we supposed to do? We can't help but laugh at her. Just had to share.

Somebody's Tired

Valerie has been tired the last couple of days. I let her sleep today and she slept until 9:30. She didn't take a nap and had to get up to use the bathroom during dinner. Well - she was in there for a long time and it got really quiet. Got up to check on her and this is what we found. Yes she is asleep.

Exercise Update

Well - after not exercising since last Tuesday...I got out and ran tonight. Didn't want to, was finding every excuse not to do it, but decided I needed to just get out there. I'm glad I did. I only did a mile, but it actually felt good. Still have to stop and walk, but I'm okay with that. Todd and I just need to be okay with me working out in the evenings right now with kids having snotty noses. I had to wake Valerie up at 9am today for school. If I knew she would have slept for another hour, I may have let her go, but my luck she would have gotten up at 9:15. Oh well - she did have a good day at school. Veronica was great for me today - we dropped off recycling, went to Kohl's, went to the grocery store and then got Steak n Shake. It was nice. Then she took a good nap so I could get the grass cut and Valerie watched a movie and played nicely inside while I did that. Overall - not a bad day.

Valerie First Day of Preschool

Ready to leave Ready to go inside

A New First

It happened today...Samantha got her first official phone call from a friend. The good news...it was a girl. The bad news....it has begun. One of the girls in her class lives just around the corner and wanted Samantha to come and play. We just had too much tonight - it was the first night of Religious Ed for Samantha. I answered the phone and this little voice asked for Samantha and it caught me so off guard; I asked who was calling and she told me. I gave the phone to Samantha and told her who it was. Then Samantha answered her with "Maybe another time." Then they hung up. I called the Mom back just to make sure it wasn't misunderstood and that Samantha really did want to play, but we couldn't. It was too funny. She seems to be making a lot of friends and "blossoming" socially - which I'm very happy to see her having fun with lots of different people. We went to the Back to School Bash a few weeks ago and it was just me and her. She is a lot like me. She kind of hung back a little and took it all in and checked it out and then she started seeing people she knew and once that happened she took off and was playing and didn't want to leave. That is exactly how it worked for me that night too. I gradually started seeing people I recognized and talked to some that I knew just a little - so it was good for both of us to broaden our social circles a little more. Thanks for listening. I have pictures from Valerie's first day of school I'll try to get out here soon. Bad news here - I am working on the second week of not working out. Took Valerie to the doc last Monday, Samantha got off the bus Monday with a fever so everyone stayed home. Then Veronica had a fever again on Friday so we were back at the docs and she is finishing up a round of antibiotics. Valerie had a fever today so she has started on them as well. Maybe next week all will be healthy enough for the Y and I won't be sick. UGH!

Book Recommendation

Okay - so I have a book I would recommend to everyone. It is called The Shack and the author is William Young I believe. The main character - Mack, suffers a great loss in his life and he meets God in a shack. It is actually the trinity that he meets and the description of how they work together within people and why things happen the way they do....it is a very interesting view of our relationship with God and with each other. There is a very insightful discussion about freedom of choice too. I bought it yesterday and finished it last night. Keep in mind, I'm a reader and I stayed up until 11:30 so I could finish it, but it is a relatively short book. I am going to read it again so I can really absorb more of it this time around. Speaking of God and faith - I had the opportunity to experience an act of grace this evening. I've mentioned Beth - who is expecting the baby, Jeremy, with Trisomy 13. Well, my church has a shawl ministry that I was involved in at one point. They knit and crochet prayer shawls. I contacted Beth's sister to see if she would appreciate a shawl. Her sister had been thinking the same thing, but just hadn't called me about it yet. I got the shawl last week and was able to give it to Beth tonight. Here is where the grace comes in. I had a general idea of what the shawl looked like - at least the colors in it. Well - when we unwrapped it to show Beth, it was an actual triangle shawl that she could wear. Not the more rectangular "blanket" that is typically given. Then it turns out all the colors in it are Beth's colors that she likes to wear and she would actually wear a shawl like this. I'm amazed at how these things work out. I have another friend that helps out with the shawls and she says she doesn't pick the shawls for the recipient, the shawls pick them. There is also a friend who tells me there are no coincidences. I believe her. God has a plan and sometimes based on our choices he has to alter it slightly, but he does know what we need. As usual, thanks for listening.

Ramblings

So - I should be going to bed, but am not quite ready. My mind is racing - I just finished watching McCain speak. I will say I was very excited last night after watching Palin and am thinking the Republicans may actually have a chance. Yes - I am a conservative. I discovered I was a republican while in college (although I didn't completely understand what that meant). I was playing a game called "Scruples" - not a game I would recommend with people you don't know very well. Anyhow - I had the question "You own a company that is struggling - do you make cutbacks to save the company or try other means with the chance of losing the company?" I said I'd make cutbacks because what good would the company be if it went totally under and everyone lost their jobs. This way - I could hire the people back when the company got back on its feet. Anyhow - one of the guys playing the game couldn't believe my choice and he said I was such a republican. It didn't mean a whole lot to me then. I don't like to tell people my views because in certain situations - I don't have all the facts. That is my biggest complaint with both candidates - they tell us all the things they are going to change and make better, but they don't tell us how. They are all kinds of great ideas, but how are they going to be implemented? If anyone knows where I can find that info - I'd appreciate it. I'm also not able to sleep because of thinking about my workouts - I've missed two days. Because of kids and thinking one had strep. Wednesday was out because they slept late so I was going to run after Todd got home, but opted out of it when I discovered it was 90 plus outside. Didn't make it today because I had to take Ron to the doc to check for strep. No strep, just a virus. So - now I'm motivating myself to go tomorrow and get at least a 3rd workout in this week. BUT - if it doesn't happen, it won't be the end of the world. I'm okay with it. Val is LOVING school. She can't wait to get home and show me the crafts she made that day. Although today it sounded like she told Todd she did "craps" at school. Take that however you want - we are going to ask if gambling is part of the curriculum. Sam is doing well. Homework is working out much better after dinner. She is struggling with not being a tattletale, but not being afraid to tell someone if she needs to. She mentioned a boy in her class and said he was a bully. So I asked her if he had done anything to her and she said he had taken her lunch star before she could get it. I asked if she told the teacher and she said that is tattling. I told her next time to tell the boy that she doesn't like for him to do that and to please stop, but if he keeps doing it, it is okay to tell the teacher what is happening. Every day is something I've not covered before. Well - I think I've covered all the things that keep me awake and I apologize for the random thoughts. Keep on praying for Aaron, Beth and Jeremy. The strength Beth is showing is amazing. She has such strong faith and I am amazed. I don't know if I could be as strong in the same situation. But I guess there isn't much she can do except to pray. Thanks for listening/reading. I need to get to bed - Leno is on, it is past my bedtime.

Yea! Rain!

So - don't know how long it is going to last, but it was so nice to be looking out the window and watching the rain come down! I haven't cut the grass in over two weeks. Our backyard looks pitiful - between lack of water and kids playing on it all summer. We need about 3 days of rain and no one on it. Which is hopefully what we will be getting the rest of the week. I may have figured out the homework stress. The last couple of weeks have been awful between the hours of 4 and 6pm. Part of that had to do with getting the 15-20 minutes of homework in with Sam. We were trying to do it after a snack, but before going out to play. Not really her focus at that time. Plus the other two would be needing things and I'd be so frustrated and unhappy by the time Todd got home. This week we decided to try after dinner. Just let her play after school and not worry about it. It went so much smoother. She was ready at that point and there was someone to take care of the other two so Sam could get the full attention she needs and wants. Whew! Huge sigh of relief - hope this continues. Val had her first day of preschool today. She loves it. I told Todd the hardest part was watching all the 2 year olds crying and not wanting to be there, knowing my 2 year old would stay. She cried when I made her leave. She missed the cutoff date by 7 days. She is on the waiting list - I'm hoping someone drops out. But if not, she enjoys playing at the Y while I work out. Did 15 min on the bike and weights today - need to up my weights and can go longer on the bike next time. Here's hoping it keeps on raining!

One Week Down

Well - I managed to get my workouts in last week all the days that I wanted. I went and had my "coach approach" meeting at the Y and set up 4 goals for the next 6 months - Lose 20 lbs, drink 24 oz of water a day, run 2 miles without stopping, bike an hour a week. We'll see where I am at the end of 6 months - I have a follow up appointment in two weeks to see how I'm doing. I did a 2 mile run/walk today - felt like crap. It was first thing in the morning and I was stiff. I notice a difference - even when I run at the Y, I've at least been up walking around and doing stuff - so the 7:30am run wasn't so good. The weather was nice though. I got all set to do some of the weight machines at the Y. The problem is, Ron of course had a 101.2 fever today. I don't think she had it before bed, but I'll take her temp in the morning. If she still has one, I have to wait until Todd gets home to go work out. Here's the wrench I talked about before. Val starts preschool tomorrow - I'm very excited and she is as well. It will be so nice to have a couple of mornings with just one child. Sam and I went shopping tonight. Trying to get a few things without spending a ton of money - it isn't easy. We had to keep looking at what she wanted and putting things back. There were a few tears involved, but we got through it. And then I forgot to put back one of the shirts so it came home anyhow. Oh well! So - just wanted to share my workout progress, plus it helps me keep track of where I am. Thanks!

Happy Neighbors

I just have to say how much I like our neighborhood. We have been so fortunate to have some really great neighbors and have met some very nice people. We spent most of today outside. We set the pools up out back for the girls to play. Most days there can be up to 8 or more kids playing in our yard. With it being a holiday weekend a lot are out of town so we didn't have quite as many kids. We did have our new neighbors behind us come over with their infant son and our neighbors brought their toddlers over to swim with the kids and then everyone stayed for dinner. Easy - burger and dogs on the grill. We figured it out that we were outside from 1pm until 9pm - it was a big day for the girls. The youngest didn't come out until after her nap - which lasted until 3pm, but then she swam and played until 9pm. All the kids had good dinners and played great together. Hopefully they will all sleep in tomorrow - meaning sleep until 7:30. It was a great time visiting and spending time with our friends. The added bonus is that we don't have to go anywhere tomorrow either. That is something I can do a lot more often - it was an easy, relaxed day.

Plugging Along

Well - I got my workout in yesterday. Tried Zumba for the first time. It is an aerobic/dance class. I had a lot of fun and got a really great aerobic workout. Then I did my mile on the treadmill. I may have to do a mile on the treadmill again tomorrow - UGH! Guess I'll just keep offering it up. I'm thinking of doing an advanced step class that I haven't been to in at least 2 months so I'll be good and lost and then I'll get on the treadmill. Can you tell I'm not very excited about tomorrow. Oh well - TGIF! I'll be happy once I'm finished and that will allow me to enjoy my drinks and snacks over the weekend. I know I know - that isn't going to help me lose 20 lbs, but like I said, I'm focusing on the routine of exercise. I'm also going tomorrow night to get set up so I can start using the weight machines - hopefully that will help and I'll do that twice a week. Gotta get to bed. Thanks for the support and keeping me honest. Thanks for listening too.

Catch Up

Well - it was nice to have a day off today. My ankles were tender this morning, but were fine the rest of the day. In order to get a run in tomorrow, I'm thinking I'm going to have to do it on the treadmill - YUCK! I don't like treadmill running. Oh well - I have someone that I am offering it up for - she and her family can use the prayers. She is expecting her first child in January and they just found out that the baby is positive for Trisomy 13. Not a good prognosis, but they are trying to stay positive and putting their faith in God's plan - so that is who I will be running for tomorrow. Keep them in your prayers - Aaron, Beth and baby is Jeremy. Okay - time to catch up. Where do I start? Val is our ham and our athlete as of now. Todd was teaching her how to throw and catch a frisbee the other day and she was doing awesome - we actually had the triangle going and were playing catch with the three of us. She also likes to smack the ball off the tee (as in baseball). She is a switch hitter right now - hmmmm? Can she make any money with this skill? Olympics stories - Sam was tired of us watching them. We did actually get the Synchronized swimming on for a little bit and Val was laying on the floor pointing her toes, kicking her legs around, trying to mimic what the teams were doing on TV. The next day they watched almost 2 Rhythmic Gymnastic routines using the rope and the next thing I know, they are outside with the jumpropes and Val is holding it exactly the way she saw on TV and jumping and trying to throw it up and catch it. We have mimics in this house. I did my loud whistle where I use my fingers in my mouth and the next thing I know, Ron is trying to do it too. She still doesn't speak coherently though - I'm waiting for the switch to turn on. She talks a lot and she knows what we are saying, she just can't convey her message very well. Met Val's teachers tonight - she starts next week (yeah!) One of the subs remembered her from last year as liking to talk and was amazed last year at how well she could speak. It is so hard to remember she is only 3. Gotta run - I'll post tomorrow and let you know how the workout went. This will keep me honest, hopefully.

Day One

Okay - so it has been a while for the few readers I have. Things have been hectic with the start of school and meet the teachers and all that good beginning of the school year stuff. I do have a few funny stories from watching the Olympics with the girls, but I'll write about those later. I am putting this out there because I need someone to keep me on track. I want to do the 5k next May and would like to better my time of 40 minutes. I also want to do a duathlon next spring/summer. So here it is - day one of my "training." I will call it that, but it is more or less just trying to get into a consistent routine of working out, of getting off my rear and doing something to get my heart rate up and breaking a sweat. Wish this would include housework, but for this goal it doesn't. I made it to the Y today and spent 30 minutes on the stationary bike and managed to do just over 5 miles. I was pleased and now I at least have a concept of biking pace. Then tonight I went for a 1 mile run after Todd got home. No clue how long it took. For right now, I'm leaving the watch at home and focusing on just trying to run the distance. If I don't do it this week, next week I'm bumping the distance up to two miles for the run. I want to get at least 3 runs and/or workouts in a week. I want to get on the bike at least once for now. Like I said my focus is just doing something right now. I do want to lose the weight - realistically 20 lbs, ideally 30 lbs, dreaming would be 35 lbs. But it isn't so much about the weight as it is about how my clothes fit, what size I am and how I feel about my body. I'm not making the conscious change in eating habits yet - baby steps. I'd rather work out than modify my food right now. Just keep your fingers crossed no one gets sick, because that is what throws a wrench into this whole exercise plan. I'll keep you posted (for those that are interested) and I'll get some more summer pics and stories of the girls out here soon. Love!

Adventures in First Grade

Well - with a week under our belt we are off to a good start. We haven't had to run for the bus yet and I've been there to meet her at the end of the day. We had some confusion on the name though - and not the last name. Samantha decided this summer that she wanted to be Sam. So when she got to school she told her teacher. Well as I was going through her papers I found one with "Sami" written on it. Not a big fan of Sami so I said something to her. She started crying and told me that she couldn't be Sam because there was another one in the class and that is what the teacher told her to write. After thinking for a minute I asked if the teacher meant Sam E. Well needless to say we got it straightened out - she is going to be called Samantha, but can write Sam E. on her papers. Never imagined that Sam E could become Sami. We thought we could just start calling her "Same" Then we had meet the teacher last night and she told us that on Friday Samantha just started crying and said "I'm just so tired." It is an adjustment for all of us. But I must say that it is nice having all day to do things with the other two. Veronica is at her grandparents' this week - so just having one has been a breeze. We are going to the pool after lunch. Oh - another note - Samantha is now missing both front teeth. I'll get a pic and put it out here. That was some additional drama on Friday. She bumped it on the bus and it almost came out - so she came off the bus with her mouth all bloody, crying and the tooth just hanging there. Got home and got the tooth out and she finally settled down - just in time for Grandma and Papaw to show up. Whew! It was a busy week needless to say.

Another Quote

Samantha "Why do you go to bed before Daddy?" Daddy "Because Mommy needs more sleep than Daddy does." Samantha "I think Daddy should go to bed first because he works and you don't." Mommy - speechless - then "You don't think I work?" Daddy "ha ha ha ha ha ha ha - go write that one down." Oh - someday she'll learn.

Head Wounds

Samantha's head is taking a beating this week at camp - literally. She came home yesterday with a goose egg in the middle of her forehead from running into a bar on the playground. Today I got called - she fell off a small wall backwards and conked her head on a cinder block. It bled, but did stop. She seems to be okay - I have a call into the doc just to double check with them. Anyhow - it figures - we are doing pics of the girls on Saturday. Thankfully the injuries are hidden by hair. Guess she is either tired or growing.

Still On Hold

Well - the exercising didn't pick back up after VBS - we all got colds. Actually just Veronica and I did. Since I can't put a kid with a runny nose in child watch - it just didn't happen. At this rate, I'm shooting for Samantha's first week of school to get back into it. Along will all the other moms - it is going to be busy. I am wanting to get back to running when Todd gets home from work, but he isn't getting home as early as he used to. Oh well - it will all work out. I'll just keep on trying.

Favorite Movies

I seem to be getting asked this question lately so I'm going to put a few out there. This is my basic criteria - if it is on TV will I stop and watch it, no matter how many times I've seen it? The Princess Bride - Ferris Bueller's Day Off - An American President - Animal House (but it is actually better unedited so I tend not to watch it on TV for that reason) - Harry Potter (all of them) - The Lord of the Rings (all of them) - Say Anything - 10 Things I Hate About You (had seen it numerous times on TV before finally discovering the title) - Monty Python and the Holy Grail (one of the best quotable movies EVER) - Sixteen Candles - The Outsiders - The Breakfast Club - Any musical - Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire are amazing - That about sums it up. There are more, but these are the tops!

Busy Times

Finished up VBS last week and it went very well. I spent the week teaching (or trying to) 3 year olds about being thankful, brave, helpful, and telling others about God. I also taught them the sign of the cross and how to use the holy water as you enter church and why. They were great! We also did crafts and learned songs with hand motions. We were all tired come Friday afternoon. Valerie didn't even make it home before she passed out in the car - it is only a 10 min drive. Funny story from today - Valerie was in the back of the van and was crying because she had stuck her finger in her eye (not real clear on why or how). Samantha asked her if she would feel better if she stuck her finger in her eye. Todd and I just laughed and shook our heads. Needless to say the exercise routine is non-existent right now. Too tired after spending the mornings with toddlers. I'm taking tomorrow off - I want a rain day/pj day at home. Samantha is already asking for a playdate. Then I'm heading back to it on Tuesday. We got Samantha's backpack today and lunch box. Now the girls are set for that. I can't believe she starts school in 3 weeks. I am NOT looking forward to the first week - they start on Monday and she will be going all day. She is going to be tired and crabby. Well - we have nothing scheduled this week so I'm hoping for some down time for everyone since everyone is a little tired. I've got some great photos I'll have to post soon.

My Week as a Single Mom...

....stinks. Todd gets home from Germany tomorrow after midnight most likely. I'm done! You would think I'd have fun stories from this week, but not so much. I'm too tired to really think of any right now. Overall the girls have been good. What hasn't helped is the fact that we are heading out of town on Friday and getting home late Sunday and then Vacation Bible School starts at 9am on Monday morning. And I have a larger role than originally planned so I can't really miss it. So not only have I been taking care of the kids, but also getting clothes etc ready for our trip and preparing my stuff for VBS. Tomorrow evening I have to take over a bunch of toys that are going to be used in the playroom for 3 year olds. WOW! Not sure about working out tomorrow either - I tweaked my hip somehow and it is usually a pretty intense workout. I'll just see how it is when I wake up. Or - I might just skip it and put the kids in child watch for 2 hours while I go sit by the pool and relax - yeah - that sounds better. Sorry for the stream of consciousness, I should go gather toys for tomorrow. I'm just not motivated. Maybe I'll have a drink and play Rockband instead.

Things on Hold

Well - sat down and looked at the budget for the next few months and I won't be participating in the duathlon. Since I didn't feel strongly about it and I haven't been running or biking like I should, I decided it would wait another year or so. I guess I have other priorities right now - taking a couple of trips with the family for example. So - new running shoes have been put on hold (I hadn't been doing a ton of running anyhow). I'm going to keep on doing the classes at the Y and running when I can and hopefully I can get rid of the last of this baby weight (sad that it has been two years and I'm still working on it - even more sad that I know what I need to do, but just don't have the willpower/motivation to do it). In the big picture - my life is good and I have no reason to think otherwise. I appreciate what I have and how I feel.

Back Home Again in Indiana

The girls and I are back home! We spent the week in KY with the Grandparents. Had a great time swimming and just hanging out. It was nice to get a break from the house. I didn't get a break from the girls, but it is more fun when you don't have housework hanging over your head. Glad to be home though. We're going to try to get to the Fishers Freedom Festival and do the parade this year. Should be a good time - hopefully it won't rain.

We've entered....the hateful years

I was told not once, but twice today that I wasn't liked by my oldest daughter. She was in trouble for different things and she informed me that she didn't like me, that I had hurt her feelings. I guess it has started and I need to start drinking heavily. Anyone care to join me? The girls asked me the other day where we were going and I told them "crazy." Valerie started jumping up and down all excited about going crazy. Little do they know we are already there.

Thankful Reminders

I was in Target yesterday (no suprise there). I had all three girls with me and they were definitely being a handful. Not bad per se, but things were crazy. It didn't help that I was trying to go fast and getting impatient. I had an older woman stop and comment on how beautiful they are and how lucky I am to have three daughters. I thanked her for reminding me. Yes - I am lucky that I have three beautiful, healthy, happy, active daughters. Then this morning on the way to work out (yes - still working on the weight loss) we saw a rainbow. Life is good!

It's All About Me

I have STRUGGLED this week to work out at all. It has seemed very easy for me to come up with reasons not to go. But I did make it on Tuesday and today. I want to go tomorrow, but with it being the first day of summer vacation, I'm not waking anyone up if they are still asleep. Perhaps I'll run later in the day, plus I need to cut the grass. What has gotten my rear in there to exercise the last two days is thinking of the fact that I believe I'm heavier this summer than I was last year. UGH! I look at my eating habits and they aren't good, but I'm lazy. I admit it. I don't like preparing food and that is my downfall. I've always said that if there was a pill I could take that would satisfy my nutritional needs and make me feel full, I'd be all over it. Anyhow - the instructor for the class today suggested we keep a food journal. I'm not very good at it, I tried when I was pregnant to track my protein intake and I would miss things. Stephanie (the instructor) had the idea of breaking it down and not trying to do everything at once. Just shoot for increasing your water intake this week, then go for veggies, etc. I liked that approach. So, I got a small notebook and pen that I can toss in my purse for when I'm on the go and need to write down my cherry coke from steak and shake (my downfall - I like my coke). So, I will try to update you periodically on how it is going. I wish there was a 4 week biggest loser program for people who need to lose less than 100 pounds. Oh well - I have some friends that are in a similar boat so we'll see how things go. On a side note - I haven't registered for the duathlon yet. I need to get on a bike. Who knows - with it being summer break I may start taking full advantage of the 2 hours the kids will spend in childwatch at the Y and go for a run or ride after my workout. We'll see. I need to remember my Matthew Kelly quote - celebrate your progress

Bathroom Humor

Once again Valerie is on the potty and she pooped. It was explosive - let's just say I'm glad she didn't have an accident. She and Samantha are talking. Valerie is describing what her poop and tinkle sounded like. I don't know who said what, but there were thunder and lightning sound effects followed by one of them saying that her poop sounded like thunder and lightning. Todd and I just stood in the other room and laughed. Apparently we've had a lot of storms and some girls with quite the imagination.

Bathroom Quotes

Valerie "Don't put that (tp) in yet, Mommy. I want to see my poop." Mommy "OK" Valerie "Look, Mommy! There's my poop. Oh! It's big. It looks like a butterfly." Mommy "Your poop looks like a butterfly?" Valerie "Yes! Okay - we can flush it now." Mommy "OK" (what else am I supposed to say?)

Quote of the Day

Samantha had her "bridging" ceremony where she crossed the bridge from being a Daisy to a Brownie. She got home and was talking about being a brownie. Valerie asks, "Samantha, why are you chocolate?" What else is there to say?

Stuck

Veronica was wandering the upstairs this morning, like she often does. She finds her pacifier and burp cloth and goes and plays with the dollhouse in Samantha and Valerie's room. She will sometimes crawl underneath our bed after the cat. We have our bed on risers, so it is higher than normal. Veronica can fit quite easily underneath it and because of the bed we have she can even sit up. Well - I was busy downstairs and went into the living room to check on Valerie on the computer. That is when I heard the screaming and crying coming from upstairs. The thing was, it sounded muffled. I went up, thinking that she was in a closet somewhere. Well - no. I found her underneath the guest bed where the cat likes to curl up and sleep. She apparently went after her and then discovered that there wasn't as much room under the guest bed as there is under ours. She tried to sit up and turn around and got stuck. I got her out and then found that she was COVERED in cat hair. I got her cleaned up and settled down. We'll see if she tries it again or if she will remember.

The "N" word

No it's not what you think....it's NAP! Just mention the word to Valerie and she has a meltdown. Which is actually a sign that she really needs one. This weekend we went to Ohio for a HS Graduation. I stayed at the house while Veronica napped and Todd took the older two to the ceremony. It worked out because I was able to keep an eye on the food. Anyhow - I guess they were at the ceremony and someone asked her if she was going to take a nap afterwards. Apparently she proceeded to start crying and have a fit about it. She proceeded to take a 3 hour nap today - she needed one. Otherwise it was a nice visit and celebration. Todd's niece was in the show choir and they have a tradition of visiting the Seniors on graduation day and giving them a "send off" - a final performance. It was very cool getting to see that and see his niece perform a little bit. Glad we drove home last night - even though it was a late night, it was nice to be home today. Happy Memorial Day!

Adventures in Grocery Shopping

It finally happened. I have friends that talk about getting to check out and discovering all sorts of things in the cart that they didn't put in there. Only for me, I didn't even discover it until I got home. Made the trek to the store with Valerie and Veronica in tow. Not unusual and normally they are pretty good. Valerie was acting like she had to go to the bathroom and we did make one visit, but she didn't want to. Apparently she takes after her father and will hold it for hours rather than go in a public restroom. So - I was trying to go quickly because of that and the fact that Samantha would be getting home from school soon. Got to check out and Veronica started throwing a fit and clinging to my leg while I was trying to unload the cart. (she had been having fits throughout the store) A very nice woman behind me helped me unload so things could go faster. I'm guessing that is how I missed the item. I got home and discovered someone (my guess is Veronica) put an Oscar Mayer Deli Creation Sub Sandwich into the cart. It was Turkey and Cheddar Dijon. Thankfully it was something that I would eat - so I had it for lunch. It was definitely a nice change of pace, but I had to laugh that Veronica picked out my lunch for me today. Guess I have to start double checking the cart before getting into the check out lane.

Yardwork

Just a few photos of the work we have been doing in the backyard. It involved hauling 3 cubic yards of dirt and 5 cubic yards of mulch. Then planted 2 trees, 6 bushes and multiple plants and flowers. Also had to lay out rock for a walkway. The girls helped plant flowers in their own little flowerbed.

Corn

Veronica wore overalls today. We were eating corn outside today. Veronica suddenly started saying "uh - oh" We looked over and she was looking down her overalls. Suddenly she lifted her pantleg and out came a piece of corn. Before we could get to it she had picked it up and popped it in her mouth. She knew it was gone and where it was.

Burp Cloths

The youngest is a stinker. Samantha had her Pooh Bear, but the other two have been attached to their burp cloths. Which has been a blessing because we have more than one so there are multiples for if one gets lost or needs cleaned. Well, apparently Veronica is extremely attached. She will disappear upstairs and find her paci and burp cloth and then hang out in her room looking at books or go play with the doll house in her sisters' room. The other day she is upstairs, she comes downstairs and goes into the family room. I saw her come down and saw she had a burp cloth and her paci and went to see what she was up to. Well - there was a pile of burp cloths. She found the drawer and pulled them ALL out. There had to be at least six there and she got upset when I tried to take any of them back upstairs. Picture this little one walking around carrying a wad of burp cloths - it was funny.

Call Me Crazy

So - I haven't signed up or anything, I'm looking for more info, but I'm considering doing a Duathlon this summer - possibly in August. It would be a 2 mile run, 14 mile bike and 3 mile run. Anyone interested in training and joining me? I just need to keep working out and running when I can. Then I'll decide if I can fit some biking in there. I'm feeling motivated after my time in the 5k on Saturday. Imagine what I could do if I actually trained for it.

Saturday, May 3, 2008

It's Official

So - I got the official results online and I did the 5k in 39:47. I averaged a 12:50 pace. I am very happy and am still feeling good. I'm starting to feel it in the legs and back, but hopefully I'll be able to walk tomorrow. I'll probably do the 5k for a few more years and then consider the mini again. I enjoyed the three miles so much more. This time when people were saying "You're almost there." I thought - I am really almost there. I've done two miles and only have one more to go - awesome! Have a great weekend!

Personal Best

Well, I don't have the official time yet, but according to my watch I did the 5k this morning in 39:50. I am thrilled! Hadn't done a lot of training, but was confident I could do it in 45 minutes, maybe even 42 - that was my previous PB. My goal was to run the first mile without stopping and then go from there. Did the first mile and wanted to stop and walk. Decided to keep going until the first water station and then would walk a little at that point. Well - happened to run next to another runner and she looked at me and said, "I'll motivate you, if you motivate me." So the next thing I knew I had run the second mile as well. I stop for a brief walk twice, but finished up strong. I would say I walked for a total of less than 2 minutes. I saw the finish line and it was counting towards 40 and I picked up the pace a little and I think I made it in under 40 minutes. The question now is whether I will be able to walk tomorrow. Todd has registered for the mini for next year and as of now, I'm wanting to do the 5k again. 3 miles is just so much more fun for me than 13. Just had to share!

Trauma?

So - some families deal with bed wetting, throwing up, or various other nighttime problems. Our girls...they have bloody noses. Samantha got off the bus yesterday with one and then had one last night. The topper was tonight...Valerie came downstairs after going to bed and she looked like she had been in a brawl. She had blood all over her hands and her face and up on her arms. Apparently she had sneezed too. We didn't see any on the floor, but I'll have to look again tomorrow. There was some on the wall from her walking out of her room. I'll be checking the banister on the steps in the morning. Both girls are troopers though - they don't panic or get upset when it starts to bleed. Guess it is from my own experience growing up. I was prone to nosebleeds and am used to them. I think their noses are irritated from allergies.

Observations

Kids are just funny! I have been down one this week thanks to Grandma and Papaw G. Which has been nice since the youngest has been feeling under the weather and been a little more demanding of my attention. It usually turns into a brawl when the two V's are wanting on my lap. And usually one isn't interested until the other is. Anyhow - today I was cleaning (shocking I know). Veronica was hanging out upstairs while I vacuumed, etc. I was cleaning the Master Bath and she was amusing herself with various cleansers I have for my skin on the tub. Well - there is also a pump shampoo bottle for Samantha there since she showers in our bathroom on occasion. Veronica got it and was putting her hand under it trying to get some out. Once she felt like she had some on her hand (which she didn't) she would proceed to rub her hands together or "wash" her hair. The best was when she lifted her shirt to clean off her belly. She was totally in her own world just cleaning up. Valerie comes home tomorrow - hopefully Veronica will be feeling better. I'm doing the 5k this Saturday. As ready as I'll ever be at this point - shooting for 45 minutes. Shouldn't be a problem. Just keeping my fingers crossed it doesn't rain.

6 Years?

So I got one of those personal fact emails today from a friend. This one was a little different - all of your answers were supposed to be one word answers. For example - hair - I put dirty, something you aren't wearing right now - makeup. Anyhow, one of the questions was where do you want to be in 6 years? I really had to stop and think. I tend not to think past the next month let alone 6 years. My first thought was on a beach, but that is where I want to be all the time. So then I started thinking about how old the kids would be - 12, 9, and almost 8. WOW!!! They'll be in school all day - will I go back to work? Most likely not, at least not full time. I like being available for school stuff and who knows what activities they'll be involved in. So the only thing I could come up with was to be fit/healthy - because that is something that I don't think will change and it is something I'm working on right now. It feels as if I don't have goals - I do, but I guess so many of them center around the girls. My goals are to be a good mom, to teach my girls to be confident and caring. I want to raise girls that will give back. I do have a goal for next April, but I'll wait and post that another time. I'm still mulling it over and deciding if I really want to put it out there. And this one is all about me. Actually now that I think about it I do have dreams - learning to tap dance, participating in crew, learning to play and instrument (guitar hero doesn't count), going to Hawaii...I guess those could be called goals in a way. Okay - now I don't feel so bad and like I have no life or aspirations. I just look at them differently. What are your goals or dreams?

It is Officially Spring

Not only are flowers blooming and trees starting to bud, but allergies are kicking in and the girls got their first (and hopefully only) sunburn of the year. The weather was so nice the other day I toted all of us outside and was in such a rush to get out of the house I completely forgot sunscreen. I didn't notice until the next morning when Valerie had her shirt off I could see the line on her arms and then noticed she and Samantha both had pink cheeks. They weren't fried - just a little pink that was gone by the end of the day. Now I have the sunscreen sitting out. A quick workout update: Did something 4 times this week - classes M, Tue, and Fri, ran/walked Tue, Thu, and Fri - just a mile Tue and Fri and 2 miles on Thu. I'm feeling good. I can't believe how much I missed the exercise classes. Todd has made it a few times this week as well. He was already working out and missed the earthquake this morning. Apparently it wasn't felt at the Y. It woke me up and I had California flashbacks. The bed was shaking and things were knocking around making noise and I thought to myself that had to be an earthquake. I turned on the tv and sure enough - they were talking about it. My parents also felt it in Kentucky. Well that is the update on the Elfreich's right now. Samantha had a field trip today, but she won't tell me much about it since I wasn't there. (she is such a girl) Valerie and Veronica were worn out from playing at the child care at the Y. Thankfully they enjoy it. Veronica cries when I leave, but is busy playing when I go to pick her up so I know she settles down. It makes it a lot easier for me to go work out. Hope the weather is nice for everyone and enjoy the weekend.

How Old am I?

So - went on Spring Break last week to my parents' in Kentucky. Great trip, Samantha got some one on one time and the girls all got to ride horses. Today it was back to the grind - school, housework, working out etc. I had seen an ad a few weeks ago through our parks and rec about an "antique roadshow" bring one item and have it looked at. I have a typewriter that was my Grandmother's that I've always wondered about so I decided to go. It was free so why not? I had to take Veronica since the older two had swim lessons. So I load Veronica and my 20 pound typewriter into the car and drive to the train station where this is being held. At this point I need to tell you the organization that is hosting this...the 55+ club. I didn't realize that meant I was supposed to be 55+. I walked into the room and realized it wasn't at all what I thought and wanted to turn around and go home. But I had managed to get Veronica and the typewriter into the building without injuring myself, I decided to stay. I sat myself in a corner and tried to be as inconspicuous as possible with my typewriter and active daughter. A gentleman from the newspaper came over and interviewed me. He wanted to know the story with the typewriter. So I told him where I got it, how old I thought it was, how long I'd had it etc. Todd asked why he talked to me and I decided it was because I looked the most uncomfortable. Oh well - I missed my opportunity though. He asked how old I was and I should have told him 55 and that Veronica was my granddaughter and don't I look damn good? I didn't though - I could barely remember how old I really am. I sat there for an hour and listened to the experts talk about the different items people brought in - nothing really stellar. One guy had a bookend that could be worth anywhere from 2000-20,000, but the expert needed to do more research. Finally they get to my typewriter. I'm guessing maybe $100 optimistically - I have seen similar items and know they aren't that uncommon. I was still a little disappointed to hear only $30-$50. But he did comment on how good of condition it is in and you can tell it isn't sitting in an attic or barn - I felt good about that. I do have it out on display - why have it, if you aren't going to put it out? So - I lugged my typewriter to the car and came home. Oh well - it does have me intrigued about other items. Maybe next time I'll put on a wig or something so I don't stand out so much. I'll have to check the paper tomorrow and see if I'm mentioned at all.

Be Careful What You Post

I guess I won't ever write that there really isn't anything entertaining to report. Todd obviously posted the previous event. So sorry I missed it, but I did get to see the finished product. It looked like she either had on a red glove or had stuck her hand in a bowl of red dye. I asked her why she did it and she finally (after claiming she didn't know) told me she wanted to make it beautiful.

Caught Red Handed

Through the years we have been pretty lucky when it comes to pencils, crayons, and markers. Samantha has always used paper and is almost always drawing at the table. Valerie also is pretty good about coloring only at the table. Now sometimes, she colors on the table, but that is rare and is usually caused by coloring off the page and is not intentional. Veronica doesn't quite have the concept down and likes to walk around with these items. All of this is good reason to not get a new kitchen table for a few years. We don't have any marks on the wall where crayons or pencils have been used. All the girls have been very good in this regard. This evening we were introduced to a new medium for our young artist to use. Now some of the great artist used canvas and some might have worked in clay or stone. Our new artist used skin. This evening, Sheri went for a run outside. When she got home, she went upstairs to clean up. All 3 girls were at the kitchen table coloring and drawing while I was on the phone with a buddy of mine. I happened to look up into the kitchen to see Veronica hit the floor as she took a quick exit from her chair. She rolls over on the floor crying and gets up. I get off the phone and give her a hug. She calms down and quickly is off to something else. I look down at my jeans and notice some spots on my jeans. Someone is bleeding! I then chased down Veronica and found the victum with blood coming down from her new fat lip. So, I got her cleaned up and was in the process of helping Samantha with her homework. I was standing inbetween the 2 remaining girls coloring at the table when I looked down at Valerie who had a look on her face of "I'm not up to any good sitting here." I even said it -> "you look like you are up to no good." I walked away for a second and then returned to the table. I noticed that Valerie was sitting awfully still and her hands were still under the table. I peeked under the table to find a red marker in Valerie's right hand. On her left hand I found the ink. Her entire left hand was covered in red marker. All the way up to about an inch up past her wrist. Not a spot was missed. I give her credit for being very thorough. Her hand looked as if it was left in the sun for 8 hours and no sun screen. After a quick washing in the sink, her hand remains with a light tint of red. No more markers for Valerie for a while.
